Elder Abuse, Neglect, and Maltreatment: What Can Be Done to Stop It This timely analysis comes just as the Baby-Boomers are beginning to approach their retirement years. Elder abuse is already a problem of significant proportions, and the problem will only get worse as the proportion of elderly in the population increases. This look at the problem finds that much more emphasis needs to be put on the training of care givers, and on more careful selection of care givers in the first place. This, of course, implies higher standards, requiting a greater allocation of resources. However, as the author cogently points out, this is a problem that will probably affect us all, sooner or later. We had best address it now, before the problem becomes insoluble. |
Frauds Against the Elderly Fraud committed against the elderly has reached epidemic proportions, and the problem will only worsen as a large segment of the American population approaches retirement age. This book explores the disturbing rise in these offensescrimes aimed at a vulnerable segment of society that is often unable to overcome the consequenceswith an eye towards helping seniors protect themselves. This handbook first defines fraud, then discusses why the elderly are targeted, the growing scope of the problem, and why these crimes often go unreported or unsolved. The second section clearly explains 28 of the most common types of fraudincluding home improvement scams, health frauds, identity theft and magazine salesin a manner that allows readers to recognize and avoid the predatory actions of others (whether strangers, friends, or even family members). The third section provides a list of resources and actions to take and for those who believe themselves to be the victim of fraud. The book also contains a list of related acronyms, an index and a bibliography. Elders, Crime, and the Criminal Justice System: Myth, Perceptions, and Reality in the 21st Century This book provides an introduction to issues pertaining to our better understanding of older people in the criminal justice system. It is organized according to stages in the criminal justice process, beginning with crime prevention, victimization, and elders as offenders. Criminal trials and the experience of older people in the roles of judge, attorney, defendant, witness, and juror as well as perceptions of the elder in these roles are discussed. Discussion of incarceration of the elderly, possible early release, and parole are included, too. Each chapter documents current empirical data and identifies social, policy and ethical implications where applicable. This volume will debunk common misperceptions about older people and crime, identify emerging policy and planning issues, and underscore important areas for future dialogue and research.Paperback: 373 pages Company: Springer Publishing Company (2000-07-15) ISBN: 0826113346 List Price: $53.95 Amazon Price: Used Price: $5.89 Getting Older, Getting Fleeced: The National Shame of Financial Elder Abuse and How to Avoid It Author: Pamela Camille

But for the elderly, being the victim of fraud can be disastrous, and they are the most common and vulnerable targets of everyday scams, cons, and frauds. From identity theft to gambling scams, from power of attorney issues to pyramid schemes, there is no dearth of creativity in the ways some criminals will relieve the elderly from their money and their homes. Here, Alt and Wells describe the most common scams, offer the stories of actual victims, and detail ways to protect yourself and your family from becoming easy targets. What makes the elderly such easy marks for con artists? How can they avoid the common traps? Knowing about them is one place to start, and this book helps readers to understand and identify the most common scams perpetrated against the elderly. Because such cons are so hard to prosecute, it is important to know the methods criminals employ to separate innocents from their hard-earned money. This lively, vivid account of one of the most insidious forms of crime will help families and individuals protect themselves and their loved ones from the machinations of those who view them as easy marks.Author: Betty L.
