Amazon.com: "spouse abuse" in Amazon.com Recognizing Abuse: Reclaiming Your Birthright It is a nonfictional anthology on abusive relationships. It is a self-help guide which deals with child abuse, domestic violence; male, gay and lesbian, workplace, rape, and elderly abuse. It discusses physical and emotional violations. I share my experiences of how I left an abusive relationship with three sons under age five, believing I was healed but later lived with 20 years of emotional/mental abuse, and how I failed to recognize the signals. I discuss the effects it had on my three sons. The two-year study includes experiences of over 200 males and females, the 'red flags' to watch for, causes of abuse, how to overcome an abusive relationship, solutions for healing, how society can help, and how to reclaim your birthright entitlements in order to live a peaceful life. Also included is a glossary and list of organizations relative to the groups described above. Because so many people are "addicted" to abuse, as I was, they fail to recognize it, but the effects of this dis-ease is passed on to others, and many people become physically and mentally ill. My emphasis is on male abuse. In order to get rid of pedophiles, rapists, etc., society has to recognize that young boys are abused just as young girls are, and most are violated by fathers, mothers, and other role models! We must stop the sex role stereotyping which does not allow for boys to "open up" and share this information, consequently, they are never healed; many grow up to become abusive. We must "break this cycle!" In order to do this, we must admit that they are being sexually abused at about the same rate as girls; they just do not speak up until in therapy or incarcerated. Many people believe they are not affected; we are all involved; because our tax money goes toward keeping them in prison! We must all take a stand and report violations, especially child abuse and elderly: those who are helpless! Geffner and Mantooth describe a model incorporating several theories and approaches of psychotherapy, while focusing on abuse as a primary issue. The program and techniques have been used and improved for more than 15 years in programs across the country. The clinician will receive a comprehensive intervention program that includes 26 weekly sessions that address how to initiate the foundations for a therapeutic relationship; communicate and express feelings; teach self-management and assertiveness techniques; discuss intimacy issues; and implement a relapse prevention program. Each session contains brief intervention techniques, handouts, and homework assignments. The advantage of this approach is its flexibility. Modifications to the order in which the sessions are conducted can be made by trained clinicians to fit the needs of their clients. This unique book fills the void of available literature on domestically violent women, taking a frank look at the issues surrounding female batterers who are the primary aggressors in their intimate relationships. Contributors write candidly about the similarities and differences between violent women and violent men, how to develop effective interventions, existing theories on the development of abusive behavior in women, and society's response to violent women. The counseling and psychological community has responded to the problem of domestic abuse and violence against women. But very little has been done to address the issues of domestic abuse and violence committed by women. Women Who Perpetrate Relationship Violence presents innovative original research that focuses specifically on women as offenders, rather than simply adapting programs created for male batterers to women. The book includes epidemiological studies, secondary analyses, personality profiles, and a study of women entering a 16-week, court-mandated, batterer intervention program (BIP). Women Who Perpetrate Relationship Violence examines: predictors of intimate violence, including antisocial criminal records, alcohol abuse, and personality disorders associations between interpersonal dependency and violence elevated histrionic, narcissistic, and compulsive personality traits personality disorders lethal domestic assaults recidivism differences in demographic and psychological variables between women who complete treatment programs and those who drop out and much more Women Who Perpetrate Relationship Violence is an invaluable professional resource for psychologists, social workers, and counselors. |
